Watching window(F12) and adaption to aspect ratio 4/3 vs16/9

Postby poutnikl » Thu Jan 22, 2015 9:14 am

It may not be a bug, but IMHO perhaps not intended nor expected behaviour either.
Or, I do something wrong.

I often use SmartDVB in "watching window" mode by F12 ( forgot official name ).
I have set aspect ratio to "Adapt to 4/3 or 16/9 source.

The point is, it seems to remember aspect ratio used last time, and does not adapt to current one.
If current video is 4:3 and previous 16:9, it is horizontally letterboxed and vice versa.

BUT
It IS aware about correct aspect ratio of current video, or read it at the moment I touch the edge and start to resize the window.
As it immediately adapts to correct aspect ratio.

I use SDVB 0.4.0.11

Vista64 HPremium SP2, SmartDVB 0.4.0.11 / run under limited win account/ user profile config
Using SmartDVB as alternative to vendor's WinfastPVR2.

do you have the option 'set aspect ratio from source' enabled? The 'auto adapt' should only be used if you want to modify AR from 4:3 or 16:9 to some other specific AR for 4:3 or 16:9, if you only want to show the current AR for the current source these should not be used and set to 'none'. Most people won't require the 'auto adapt' feature. Might still be bugs there though since not many people might use this option.

Yes, in setting, general section, I have set 'set aspect ratio from source' ON.

Auto adapt aspect ratios just below it are for both 4/3 and 16/9 set to none.

In context menu over video in main or watching window
I have checked in aspect ratio "Auto adapt aspect ratio from 1/3 or 16/9 source".

I admit I may be little confused and lost in all ratio options.

What I want to see is SDVB adapts automatically to aspect ratio of the source,
as it does so when kicked by manual resizing of the window.

if you only want to set the current aspect of the source you should also disable the 'Auto adapt aspect ratio from 1/3 or 16/9 source'. The latter is coupled to the general 'auto adapt' settings, it allows you to quickly toggle the auto adapt feature on/off (default should be off and AR should be set from source correctly). I agree the naming might be somewhat confusing here, and this might be somewhat confusing. So to simply just set the 4:3 or 16:9 etc source ratio that's all that's needed, other options off. Anyhow, this sounds like a small bug/oversight also, if no auto adapt is set the (both to none) aspect ratio should be set to the source (no matter what other option's set), might be right now that's skipped so i'll review that.

Hmmm.. do I understand it well, that

if I cancel checking "Auto Adapt to 4/3 or 16/9 of aspect ratio of the source in the context menu - video aspect,
SDVB should autoadapt to DAR of the source, encoded in MPEG TS ?

Or, do I have to do it manually in the same place of context menu, explicitly setting it manually to 4/3 or 16/9 ?

yep, the 'set aspect ratio from source' general options settings should do what you require. The auto adapt general settings were added lateron (by request) to rescale 4:3 etc after it being set by the MPEG TS source. No need to set it manually unless it's a bug.

Hmm, the adviced settings
Settings-general Set aspect from source + both actions as None
Video context menu - aspect ratio- auto adapt OFF

does not work, doing the same as my original settings

Video context menu - aspect ratio- auto adapt ON

I.e. it DOES display properly of aspect ratio of video itself,
but it DOES NOT properly adapt aspect ratio of the window.

It DOES properly adapt aspect ratio of the window at the moment I manually resize the window by mouse.

I still did not find the solution for above. It uses last used aspect ratio of the window. If video changes the format, it will get horizontally or vertically letter-boxed, until I manually start to resize window by dragging. Then it immediately adapts window aspect ratio to *always* correct video aspect ratio.
